What is Akahada ware?

From the history of Manyo to how it is used today and how to care for it. The famous phrase "Aotan Yoshi" in the Manyoshu is a makurakotoba for Nara. In fact, it means that there is good soil here that is suitable for pottery.
Today, we will take a look at the history and present of Akahada-yaki, the pottery of Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. A recent Akahada-yaki staple, Nara-e (Nara-e) miniature plates decorated with scenes from Nara.

Akahada ware is a pottery made in the hills of Gojouyama, Nara City. It is said that the name comes from Gojouyama, another name for Mt. Akahada, or from the color of the soil that burns red, but historical records are scarce and there are many theories. One of the seven Enshu kilns (seven kilns reportedly taught by Kobori Enshu, who was a famous tea master representing the beginning of Edo).

Akahada-yaki is a general term for pottery produced in the area, and there is no specific definition. In recent years, Nara-e (Nara-e means "Nara pictures" in Japanese) plates decorated with scenes of shrines and temples, deer, and other Nara scenes have become popular.

Characteristics and uses of Akahada ware

It is said that the soil layer in the Gojouyama area of Nara City is originally thin, and the color of the soil changes depending on the place where it is collected. As a result, Akahada-yaki is not defined by a specific color, glaze, or firing method, but rather by its ability to produce a wide variety of pottery.

How to care for Akahada ware

How to wash?

Basically, you can use a household sponge with a small amount of detergent and wash it. If the surface of the bowl is rough, you can use a scrubbing brush to not only remove dirt easily, but also to make the surface smoother and less likely to get dirty again. However, if you scrub too hard, it may weaken the strength and cause cracks or breaks, so use only moderate scrubbing.
